Welcome to the Wiarton Keppel International Airport

When the Federal Government annouced in 1995 that the airport would close on June 1, 1996, both the municipalities of Wiarton and Keppel showed interest in a joint ownership agreement.

A public meeting was held on February 11, 1996 regarding the future of the airport. On this day, a volunteer group, FOTA (Friends of the Airport) was formed, with the mandate to help out however they could around airport, doing small jobs, etc. Ownership was officially transferred to Wiarton and Keppel on May 17, 1996.

Since that day, FOTA members have logged over 15 000 hours of volunteer work. Painting, grass cutting, snow plowing, tree trimming, general maintenence, special event personnel... the list of what these members have done over the years is endless.

FOTA meetings are held on the last Saturday of the month, at the Airport. Contact co-ordinator Hank Nuis at 519-592-5602 or hanknuis@msn.com for more information.
